Panerai Watches on Sale

The Panerai Watch Company was started by Guido Panerai in a small shop in Florence making precision mechanisms; the shop went by the name "Officine Panerai".  The company went on developing all types of compasses, gauges and other devices up until the 1930’s when they started making and selling wristwatches – their first big customer was, at the time, the Italian Navy; their first foray was to develop a watch for frogmen; for underwater use – the first watch, which officially came out in 1938 was named the “Radiomir”.

The Radiomir is the watch that started the company off - and it continues to define the “look” of Panerai Watch; which is the large, bold face with easy to read numerals and large luminescent hands.  In fact, it is believed the original Radiomir had hands that were made using radioactive radium (not these days though, for safety reasons) so the frogmen could read it underwater.  These days, here at Yaegerwatch.com we offer the Radiomir and the updated “Luminor”, along with other styles of Panerai watches at discounted prices.

Panerai Watches – Information & History

  • In the early 20th century the company started experimenting with luminous materials in the effort to create a viewing device which could be seen or read in dark places; these devices were ordered by the Italian Royal Navy for use in various devices.
  • It was Giuseppe Panerai, Guido’s son who developed the first timepiece, the Radiomir; as well as the later Luminor; in and around 1936.
  • In 1943 Panerai introduces the first chronograph for officers in the navy; which was also good to 200 meters.
  • A number of years later, the toxic substances in the original Luminor were replaced with tritium; and subsequently, patents are granted.
  • In 1972 Giuseppe Panerai passes away.
  • 1980; Panerai designs a watch which can withstand pressure to a depth of 1,000 meters; case built out of titanium.
  • In the mid 90’s the Company creates a number of limited edition models which include the Luminor Marina and Mare Nostrum Chrono; a few years later they put out the Slytech; which was limited to only 500 units, and inspired by Sylvester Stallone who had requested it; they are all engraved with the actors signature.
  • In 1997 the Company is bought out by Richemont and new production is ramped up; along with new improvements in production, etc.  And a year later new watches are introduced which include: Luminor Submersible, Luminor GMT and the Luminor Power Reserve.
